Memorial Portraits
A hand-drawn portrait can be a quiet, lasting way to keep someone close. I create memorial portraits of loved ones and much-missed pets from the photographs you treasure — old or new.
There's no rush and no pressure. We can talk things through at whatever pace feels right for you.
How it works
A Gentle Process
Start with what you have
Many memorial portraits are drawn from older photos, phone snaps or prints. Send what you have and I'll let you know honestly what will work best.
Bring people together
Separate photographs can often be combined — a loved one alongside a grandchild they never met, or a pet with their owner. You'll see a mock-up to approve first.
Your say throughout
I send progress photos as the drawing develops so you can ask for small changes — the way someone wore their hair, or the right expression.
Delivered with care
Your portrait is carefully packaged and sent anywhere in the UK, or can be collected locally in Devon.
A keepsake to treasure
Memorial portraits are some of the most meaningful pieces I draw. Whether it's a parent, grandparent, partner, child or a much-loved pet, I take great care to capture not just a likeness but the personality you remember.
Old photographs are welcome — I've drawn from wedding photos taken decades ago. Because every portrait is drawn by hand, it becomes something new rather than a copy of the photo: a piece of art to frame, display and pass down.
A memorial portrait can also be a thoughtful gift for someone who is grieving. Gift vouchers are available if you'd rather they choose the photo themselves.
Pricing is hourly, with three turnaround options: Standard (£15/hour, around 3 weeks), Priority (£22/hour, 7–10 days) and Express (£30/hour, 3–5 days). Once we have agreed size, number of subjects and any background, I can give you an estimate of the hours involved. As a guide, most portraits are drawn on A3 paper: a single person or pet takes around 10 hours (about £150 at the Standard rate) and two subjects around 15 hours (about £225), plus UK postage from £4. A 50% deposit secures your slot.

Questions
Can you work from old or low-quality photos?
Often, yes. Older prints and phone photos can work well. The clearer the face, the more accurate the portrait, so if a photo isn't suitable I'll tell you honestly and we can look at alternatives together. Please send photos unedited and without filters.
Can you combine people from different photos?
Yes — this is something I've done on many occasions. Lighting and angles are considered first, and a rough mock-up is agreed before work starts.
Can you draw a pet who has passed away?
Of course. Pet memorial portraits are among the most common pieces I draw. See also pet portraits.
